Easter in Bali

Indonesia’s diverse range of beliefs across the population means that a number of different events are celebrated throughout the country. Even though the vast majority of the island of Bali identify as Hindus (as of the last census), this doesn’t mean that you won’t find any Easter-related events here. In fact, Ascension of the Prophet Day, Easter Friday and Easter Sunday are all public holidays in Indonesia – a nod to the country’s diverse religious groups.

You’re more likely to find Easter celebrations happening in family homes, Christian churches and resorts catered to Western tourists. As Bali has one of the higher Christian populations in Indonesia, you may even hear the words ‘selamat hari paskah’, or ‘happy Easter’, exchanged amongst locals.

What’s open?

While a number of banks and government offices may close over the Easter public holidays, for many local shops it will be business as usual. Closing over the Easter weekend tends to be discretionary.
