Georgia might be part of the 50 United States, but sometimes it almost feels like it could be its very own country. In general, the South is becoming a popular travel destination for Australians, but the Peach State has a culture and vibe that is truly unlike any of its neighbouring states. This is where you’ll want to come if you’re eager for a taste of that so-called ‘Southern hospitality’.

There’s certainly a lot to explore in Georgia, but thankfully, we have you covered. Here are four can’t-miss stops that will show you what southern living is all about.

1. Atlanta and the ‘Walking Dead’ tour

Our first stop is a double threat (in a good way, mostly). If you’re a big fan of the ‘Walking Dead’ television show, then you have to head to Atlanta. Parts of the show were filmed right in the state’s capital so it makes for the perfect start to your trip. Explore this vibrant city and take a look at the filming locations of your favourite zombie apocalypse show. See everything from the original survivors’ camp to Father Gabriel’s church.

2. Savannah and Forsyth Park

If you want to get a feel for a traditional southern city, head to Savannah. Here you’ll find Forsyth Park with its quaint mid 19th Century ambience. Go for a leisurely stroll around walking trails and lounge in the shade of the old trees. It’s the perfect way to spend a lazy afternoon. As you meander, you’ll undoubtedly come across the park’s grand fountain. Toss a penny in for good luck!

3. Okefenokee Swamp

Seen as you’re down south, you just have to see some ‘gators! Get out of the cities and head to the Okefenokee Swamp, otherwise known as “The Land of the Quaking Earth” by the Native Americans. This massive site covers a large portion of southern Georgia and it’s home to about 10,000 alligators. There’s tonnes to do once you get there, including guided boat tours, wildlife shows and more.

4. Chattahoochee National Forest

You can’t leave the state without visiting one of its most beautiful national forests! Chattahoochee has 750,000 acres filled with gorgeous scenery to explore. It has just about everything you’re looking for in an outdoor experience – rivers, lakes, waterfalls and, of course, tonnes of trees. Pop by for a picnic and an afternoon of kayaking and hiking, or stay for a weekend of camping and swimming.

Things to know before you go

Don’t forget – things in America are a little different than Australia. Notably, the drinking age is older! It doesn’t matter where you’re from, if you aren’t 21 or older, you won’t going to be able to purchase or consume alcohol.

And remember, the service industry in America usually makes minimum wage – that means they are working for tips! If you’re at a restaurant or bar, taking a cab (that isn’t an Uber) or getting pampered at a spa or salon, you’re expected to tip on top of the final amount! Good service usually expects 20 per cent, but you can give more or (a little) less if you experience unsatisfactory work.

And finally, here’s a quick glossary of some southern terms that you might hear so you don’t get confused:

• Fixin’ to: Someone is about to do something – it’s going to happen.
• A mind to: Not as sure as ‘fixin’ to’, someone is just considering doing something.
• Being ugly: They probably aren’t calling you ugly, they just mean you’re not behaving.
• Barking up the wrong tree: This is a sassy way to say ‘not interested’.
• Britches: Underwear
• Cattywumpus: Crooked
• Pretty as a peach: Especially when you are in Georgia, this is regarded the ultimate compliment!
