What are the peak periods?

Summer in America runs from the end of June to the end of September. Although Australians may want to escape the colder weather back home, bear in mind that American schools are on their summer holidays. Tourist attractions may be busier and there are also some of the most popular public holidays throughout this period – Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Labor Day – which are notoriously busy times.

What is the weather like throughout the year?

Depending on which time of the year you visit America and which state you travel to, the weather will differ greatly. You can go from incredibly hot and humid along the Florida coast to below freezing in Alaska. Even in the winter months, the Florida region averages at a temperature of 16.4 degrees whereas Alaska plummets to – 11.3 C.

As a whole, in the peak summer months of both Australia and America, there is only a 0.2 difference in temperature. However, in winter there is a 10 degree difference, with Australia reaching warmer temperatures.

Los Angeles

Los Angeles Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) is a great way to see the city via the use of subway trains, light rail and buses. Connecting some of the city’s most popular destinations such as Hollywood, Downtown LA and Long Beach. For US$25 (AU$32.6) visitors can purchase a seven-day pass for unlimited rides on most Metro services.

San Francisco

Although San Francisco is made up of some notoriously hilly parts such as Lombard Street, it’s an easy and navigable city to get around by foot, while still finding the main attractions. If you want to live like a local, hop on board the ‘F’ tram line to see some of San Francisco’s main sites.

New York

New York’s subway system operates 24 hours a day and, in the year ending 2016, was used by 1.8 million riders, according to Metropolitan Transportation Authority NY figures. It is a cheap, relatively easy way to get around the city and isn’t as confusing as many people think. Hailing a yellow taxi cab is also a convenient method of transport if you are not travelling far, as it saves negotiating through the city traffic yourself.

Las Vegas

Depending on how much of Las Vegas you intend on seeing outside of the main strip, the Deuce runs the entire length, stopping at all of the main hotels and destinations for tourists. Alternatively, walking is an option for some, depending on time of year visited.
