Vietnam – seasonality and weather

Reading time: 2 minutes

What are the peak periods?

The peak season in Vietnam tends to run between March – May, along with October – late December, if you’re covering the whole country. However, because of such diverse weather conditions, it ultimately depends on which areas you are visiting and which climates you prefer.

What is the weather like throughout the year?

While the country’s weather tends to be hot and humid, because of the length of Vietnam’s coastline, expect varied conditions wherever you go.

It’s also wise for Australian visitors to take Vietnam’s monsoon climate into account when visiting. There is a southwesterly monsoon period from May to September and northwesterly from October to April, but again, depending on which areas you travel to, this may differ.

Getting around

What is the most cost effective way to get around?

Trains are a highly cost effective and efficient way to get around Vietnam. They are all generally comfortable – depending on which seat you choose – inexpensive and safe. The networks extend to the majority of must-visit destinations and allow each traveller to see the country at a leisurely pace.

Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City is one of the most popular train routes for visitors to Vietnam and for a soft berth (soft bunk bed) you can expect to pay around US$90 (AU$112.98).

However, because this journey spans an impressive 1 ,726km, some travellers may look to flying between the two destinations. Jetstar is a popular and affordable choice. For the same journey, fares average at around VND800,000 (AU$44.18) and takes just 2 hours compared to around 5 hours for the train ride.

Driving in Vietnam

A great and popular way to see Vietnam is via motorcycle or scooter. They are relatively cheap to hire and can take you to places many tours wouldn’t. However, travellers looking to drive in Vietnam will want to ensure that they have a valid driving licence. Traffic must also be taken into consideration as Vietnam is renowned for busy roads and hectic driving.
