Travel Insurance for Canada

Before exploring Canada's mountains and cities, consider travel insurance for your trip.

Why should I consider travel insurance in Canada?

From stunning mountains and lakes to vibrant cities and friendly locals, Canada tops many travel bucket lists. But with sometimes-harsh weather, costly medical bills, and the occasional angry moose encounter (unlikely, but possible!), things can go awry.

TID travel insurance offers Basic, Comprehensive, and Multi Trip plans, and could come in handy for your Canadian adventure.

What can travel insurance cover me for in Canada?

Travel insurance is like a plan B: it offers cover for those common but unexpected mishaps that could derail your journey.

Here are some scenarios where TID travel insurance may help you in case of an emergency:

  • Hospitalisation and emergency medical coverage
If you get sick or injured while in Canada, your travel insurance may be able to cover the hospital fees. Medical costs in Canada can be quite expensive, especially in an emergency. Australia and Canada do not have a reciprocal health care agreement, so the Australian government won't pay for overseas medical costs. This means you may have to pay thousands of dollars up front.
  • Flight delays
Flight delays are part of the travel experience, especially when heading to Canada’s remote regions or snowy destinations. Travel delay benefit may be able to help you manage these disruptions.
  • Lost luggage insurance
If your luggage is lost, stolen, or damaged during your flight, TID’s cover for lost luggage may be able to help.
  • Sports and activities in Canada
Canada is a playground for adventure seekers. From hiking the Rockies, to kayaking in the wilderness, make sure your travel insurance for Canada covers the specific activities you plan to engage in.
  • Covering ski and snowboard activities
Planning to hit the slopes in Canada? TID offers snow sports cover option so you can be covered while enjoying winter sports.
  • Travel insurance for families
If you’re travelling with family, TID’s family travel insurance means your loved ones, including dependents, may be protected in case of medical emergencies or any other unexpected events.
  • Cover for natural disasters
Canada’s vast landscapes are stunning, but they can also be unpredictable. Check your policy to ensure cover is available for severe weather and natural disasters, such as a snowstorms, floods, or earthquakes.

Always check the terms and conditions, limitations, and exclusions of your policy to make sure your coverage is tailored to your specific needs and trip activities.

Tips for Australians going to Canada

  • Extending your policy while overseas
If you need to extend your policy while overseas, simply contact TID and request an extension. Ensure you do this before your current policy expires to avoid any gaps in coverage. Always keep your travel dates updated.
  • Know how to access emergency assistance
In case of an emergency, keep our 24/7 emergency assistance team contact details handy. That way, you can get immediate help if you need it.
  • Weather preparation: Canada experiences diverse weather conditions. Be prepared for harsh winters or warm summers depending on when and where you travel.
  • Driving in Canada: If you plan to drive, you should consider carrying an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your Australian driver’s license.
  • Tipping culture: Tipping is customary in Canada. In restaurants, 15–20% of the bill is standard.

For work and travel:

  • International Experience Canada (IEC) Visa: Australians aged 18–35 can apply for an IEC visa under the Working Holiday Program, which allows you to live and work in Canada for up to two years. Spots are limited and applications are competitive, so plan ahead.
  • Tax obligations: Ensure you understand the tax system if working in Canada. You may need a Social Insurance Number (SIN) for employment.
  • Accommodation: Consider securing temporary housing before arrival, such as hostels, Airbnb, or shared accommodations, and explore long-term options later.
