What to look out for when travelling to Hong Kong
If you plan to go to Hong Kong in the Spring (March to May) and Summer months (June to August) then you may encounter a typhoon or two.
Hong Kong experiences around six typhoons a year on average. Thankfully, the city has a warning system to help keep everyone safe. The system grades storms from 1 to 10. 1 is the weakest, while 10 means you don’t want to be outdoors and without a really good raincoat.
Luckily TID offers cover for severe weather events. Whichever TID policy you opt for, if you are forced to cancel or rearrange your trip due to a sudden or unforeseen event such as a natural disaster you will be covered. In order to make a claim, though, you need to ensure you purchased your policy before the natural disaster became a known event. You can keep a track of travel warnings and alerts here.
Always refer to the Australian Government’s Smartraveller website for current travel alerts affecting Hing Kong before you buy a policy, before you leave Australia, and during your travels.
Traveller tip 1: You will definitely need to grab an Octopus card if you’re going to Hong Kong. The Octopus card is the easiest way of paying for any public transport in Hong Kong, this includes trams, buses, and ferries. It will also come in handy if you want to buy cinema tickets, use it for vending machines, and at convenience stores, supermarkets and a wide range of restaurants and chains. The cards can be bought and topped up at 7-Eleven and Circle K stores and MTR stations.
Medical cover and 24/7 emergency assistance
Australia does not have a reciprocal health care agreement with Hong Kong. You should consider TID travel insurance for overseas medical and for medic al evacuation and repatriation.
If you’re in an emergency medical situation, please get in touch as soon as you can with our Emergency Assistance Team. The EA team is ready to assist you 24 hours 7 days a week in medical emergencies. The EA team can help with:
- Medical care
- Help find the nearest medical facility if you’ve gone off grid.
- Medical transfer to a hospital or repatriation to Australia where necessary
- Provide multi-lingual support
- And many more.
Traveller tip 2: when travelling abroad you should always make sure you drink responsibly. If you suffer an injury or illness or if your expensive handbag is stolen because you didn’t pay attention to your surroundings while under the influence of alcohol or drugs you will not be covered if you intend to make a claim. You should also be highly cautious in Asia of accepting drinks, gum, or drugs from strangers, as there is a high prevalence in many countries of spiking and sexual assault.
