Travel Insurance for Big Sporting Events in 2024

Cheer on your favourite team knowing you’re covered if there’s a misstep along the way

Buckle up because 2024 is a HUGE year in sport. From Euro 2024 and the Paris Olympics in Europe, Copa America, the NBA Finals and US Open in North America, and a host of other games beyond, this is the year of sports travel.

You’ve got your flags, jerseys, and chants ready but have you considered a contingency plan for those times travel breaks the rules? Having an endgame on your terms can make all the difference.

Why consider travel insurance when going to watch a sporting event?

Big events draw even bigger crowds and more chance for things to go wrong. Whether you’re cheering your team from the stands, and someone swipes your stuff, or you find yourself in need of urgent medical attention, if a mishap means its game over for you attending that sporting event travel insurance may be useful to get back on track.

Planning to attend multiple events across a handful of countries this year? Lucky you! Our multi trip travel insurance can cover you across multiple countries, perfect for a ‘tour de sport’ trip. Each trip must start and end in Australia to a maximum of 35 days,

Which travel insurance plan should I choose?

Choosing the right insurance plan is akin to executing the perfect team play.

With multiple travel insurance plans to choose from you can tailor your cover to suit your needs, whether that means purchasing an Annual Multi Trip Plan for trips up to 35 days, if you’re travelling around the globe or choosing The Basics Plan because you’re on a budget after splurging to (hopefully) see your favourite team take the win — there’s a TID travel insurance plan to suit just about every playbook.

No matter which plan you choose, our travel insurance includes things like:

Trip cancellation protection

Flight cancellations and travel delays could get you jumping up and down in anger at not making that final game decider. Seasoned travellers have seen a myriad of ways trip cancellation protection may come in handy.

Baggage and personal belongings cover

Nothing ruins a trip quite like seeing your gear go missing, especially when it means you can’t wear that lucky charm jersey for the big game. TID offers cover for lost, stolen, or damaged baggage, easing the cost of replacing essential items.

Overseas emergency medical cover

No one plans for accidents or injury, but they can happen any time. With TID, you may be covered for medical expenses, including medical evacuation and repatriation, so you can cheer on your team and have access to emergency medical cover when you need it the most.

Access to our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team

TID travel insurance comes with the added security of access to the 24/7 Emergency assistance Team, because when the worst happens when you’re away from home, a helping hand goes a long way.

What's not covered?

Travel insurance isn’t designed to cover everything. Some of the scenarios where you wouldn’t be covered include things like:

  • Events that are a result of reckless behaviour
  • Cancellation costs for any event not listed as covered in your policy
  • Any medical, hospital, or dental expenses incurred in Australia under an international policy
  • If you’ve made a claim for the same costs under any other section of the policy
  • Luggage or personal effects that have been left unattended or where you have not taken reasonable care to protect it.

Always check the terms and conditions of your policy so you are familiar with exactly what is and is not covered.

Key travel tips when travelling to a big event

Whether you’re headed to the Paris Olympics, the World Surf League Championships Tour, or the Cricket T20 World Cup, big sporting events are a great way to get amongst the sports you love.

Here are some tips to help you keep your travel game strong:

  • Health huddle: Stay in peak performance mode with regular medical check-ups prior to travel, and adequate hydration while cheering your team on.
  • Play defence: Keep your eyes on your belongings and reinforce your security with anti-theft accessories such as air tags.
  • Connect with locals: The locals often know the best places to hangout during down time.
  • Ticket tactics: Dodge any last-minute ticket issues by saving digital copies of your travel sporting event tickets and making copies of all your important travel documents.

Am I covered if a sporting event is cancelled unexpectedly?

You may be eligible for reimbursement for non-refundable expenses if your sporting event is cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances.

Can I cancel my trip to a sporting event for any reason with travel insurance?

The short of it? No, you can’t.
